Monday night winter league report

Well done to all those who participated in this year’s Monday night winter league.

This full results report has been prepared by our statistician John Fudge.

Congrats to the overall winner Sheila Kavanagh. The men’s winner was Graham Robertson.

Statistics

Last year 43 members gave Monday night a try and this year it was just 33 members, but only 22 members turned up more than 4 times and only 14 turned up enough to qualify for the tournament. Only 4 new club members joined in this year, and none of them turned up more than twice! So it obviously doesn’t appeal to everyone for some reason?  This year we had the chance of playing for 26 evenings, but wet weather and Christmas and New Year dates meant we only played for 21 weeks.

Most Dedicated members!

So there has been 21 official nights play and only one member attended for 19 of the 21 evenings and contributed £95 to the club and that was Roger – and only one member attended for 20 weeks and contributed £100 to the club and that was John!

Most Improved Players!

Just one Monday night player who only played with us for the first time this year has done quite well.  Graham joined in for the first time and he started just over a third of the way down the ranking list, but ended up first and second places!

Anyway, the “OFFICIAL” most Improved Players are those that played both last year and this year, and that is only 19 members, but there were not very many significant moves upward this year! So, their final average position last year and this year means four members moved up just 3 places. That was Jeff, Caroline, Liz Zahedieh and Diana.

And one member only played twice last year, but played plenty of evenings this year and moved up 5 places – so the most improved player since last year is Sheila.

The main tournament prizes

This year only 14 members turned up enough evenings to qualify, and 18 members did NOT turn up enough evenings to qualify!

For those of you not familiar with it, one of the nicest aspects of the winter league is that you do not have to be the highest ranked player to win, but you DO have to be consistent with your scoring, and of course it helps if you turn up often.

Men’s section – If Tim had played 3 more weeks it looks like he would have won. But he didn’t.

  • Third place – Andrew Holt
  • Second place – Jeff
  • First place – Graham.

Women’s section

  • Third place – Julia
  • Second women’s place – Liz Zahedieh
  • Overall winner of the Winter League Tournament, with an amazing average weekly score of more than 4.1 points for each match – Sheila!
